The following are some of the recent studies conducted in the Steel Structure Laboratory.

Low-Cycle Fatigue of Structural Steel

Steel materials are not only strong but also ductile, and steel buildings are extensively used in high seismic zones. During large earthquakes, steel members may be subjected to plastic deformation, and beam ends may be subjected to large strain amplitudes, ranging from low-cycle fatigue to extremely low-cycle fatigue, which can lead to failure. Therefore, we conduct cyclic material tests to investigate low-cycle fatigue or extremely low-cycle fatigue characteristics of structural steels used in building structures.
Buckling is one of the factors that make these low-cycle fatigue experiments difficult. Therefore, we have developed a specimen shape that prevents buckling even when subjected to large compressive strain, and we are conducting cyclic loading tests under extremely large plastic strain amplitude, which has never been done before, in an attempt to understand the steel properties at the ultimate state.

Critical Performance of Steel Members under Small Amplitude

In recent years, the method to verify the seismic safety of high-rise steel buildings under cyclic loading due to long-period, long-duration seismic motion has become an issue. Although numerous cyclic loading tests have been conducted by various research institutes assuming long-period earthquake motion, there are few examples of cyclic loading tests at small amplitudes with plasticity rate of less than about 1, so experimental data must be accumulated. Therefore, we are conducting cyclic loading tests at small amplitudes with plasticity rate of about 1 or less to investigate the ultimate performances of steel structural members.

Stress Analysis and Fracture Prediction considering Brittle Fracture of Steel Structure Welded Joints

A large square column made by welding is used for large steel structures, and electroslag welding is used for welding the diaphragm. Electroslag welding is an excellent method for efficiently welding invisible parts of the plate using a large current, but on the other hand, the part with a large amount of heat input remains just in contact with the members, so brittle fracture is likely to occur. In this research, we are conducting joint research with steel companies, industry groupes, and other universities to research methods for predicting brittle fracture in this area and reducing its possibility.

Earthquake Resistance of Steel Moment Resisting Frames Considering Local Buckling of SHS Columns

Square steel tubes are the most widely used members for columns in steel buildings in Japan, but it is well known that square steel tube members with a large width-to-thickness ratio may cause local buckling at a relatively early stage, followed by a rapid strength deterioration. Even if columns are designed to be stronger than beams or panels and the columns are designed to remain elastic at the ultimate state of the building, the column at the lowest level of the building (first floor) are expected to be plastic. If square steel tubes with a large width-to-thickness ratio are used, local buckling may occur in the event of severe earthquakes, resulting in inadequate seismic performance of the building due to the strength deterioration of the columns. Therefore, we are conducting a seismic response analysis using a numerical analysis model that reflects the maximum bearing capacity of square steel tubular columns determined by local buckling and their subsequent bearing capacity deterioration behavior for a weak-beam-type frame model. Through these analytical studies, we are investigating the necessary horizontal bearing capacity of the steel frame according to the width-to-thickness ratio of the columns.

Response Analysis of Isolated Buildings with Spherical Sliding Bearings

There are three methods of achieving earthquake resistance in buildings: (1) earthquake-resistant structures, (2) vibration control structures, and (3) seismic isolation structures. In earthquake-resistant structures, the columns and beams resist seismic forces to prevent the building from collapsing, and in the event of severe earthquakes, the columns and beams may be damaged. On the other hand, vibration control or seismic isolation structures can reduce damage to buildings by decreasing or not damaging columns and beams through the absorption of seismic energy by the vibration control or isolation devices.
The spherical sliding bearing (SSB) is a seismic isolation device with a restoring function based on the pendulum principle and a damping function based on frictional force, and is one of the seismic isolation devices that have been attracting attention in recent years. To trace the mechanical behavior of this SSB, a numerical analysis model that takes into account temperature, velocity, and surface pressure dependence has been developed, and the validity of the model has been verified by comparison with experiments. Using this numerical analysis model, we are conducting dynamic analyses of actual scale building models and building models with large weight eccentricities, which are difficult to perform experiments, to study the seismic performance of seismically isolated buildings using SSB.

Steel Structure Damage Detection Based on Micro-Strain Vibration Measurement

Although structural health monitoring of many buildings is mainly based on measurement of response acceleration, we believe that measurement of response acceleration alone is not sufficient to identify damage to inidividual components. Therefore, focusing on the fact that strain measurement is relatively easy in a steel structure, we are studying a method to detect the stress state and damage state of each member by measuring the strain in an actual building.
Recently, we have conducted microstrain vibration measurements on three-dimensional truss roofs, square steel tubular column, and single-story building frame model to study structural damage detection in steel structures. We also use finite element analysis to investigate strain properties of steel members in detail.

Structural Member-Level Performance Evaluation Using Dynamic Strain Measurements in Real Buildings

There are few cases of strain measurement in actual buildings at this moment. For practical application of strain measurement for evaluation of structural performance, it is necessary to accumulate basic data about, for example, how well the measured strain records match the theoretical structural calculation, how much variation and noise influence, and the progress of damage. Based on this idea, we are proceeding with a measurement project on an actual building with the cooperation of companies and local governments.
